Fresh beech leaves

Fresh beech leaves

BeechLeavesAnother of spring’s many silent miracles has just unfolded.  The tan brown beech leaves that hung on through winter have whispered to the ground, their hold on the twigs loosened by the pressure of green leaves pushing out of the buds.

This sudden transformation has been long in the making, like so many other transformations in nature and in our lives.  Rosa Parks’s courageous refusal to move to the back of the bus was the fruit of years of training and preparation, hers and that of thousands of others who were birthing the civil rights movement.  So it is also with our personal transformations.  They turn on a moment yet they have been prepared for months, years or lifetimes.

Winter beech leaves still

Hang on.  When new leaves emerge

Last year’s will let go.
